More Shared Coordinate Problems

At some point, the architect will get survey units placed into their model and will orient their plan to true north and move the northing and easting and elevation around.  Now your models are not properly aligned.

As far as I can tell, there are two ways to match up a coordinate system in separate linked files after modeling has begin:

  1. Relocate a linked model to match your current model, acquire the coordinates from that linked file and save them into your current model.  In the "Shared Site" dialogue box, this is labeled as "Move instance to:"  It is probably stilled named "Internal".
  2. Relocate a linked model to match your current model, and save the current model's coordinates back to the linked model.  In the "Shared Site" dialogue box, this is "Record current position as... ...(this will modify the linked file)"
You're most likely working with your own model and a copy of the linked revit file, and cannot save permanently back to the original linked file, so you will want to choose the first option.

The best way to test if this action has been performed properly is to open the arch model, unlink (not unload) the structural, and then re-link the structural (make sure you choose the "shared coordinates" option when you add the link).  If the models are aligned, you are done.  Send the architect the new structural.

If they are not aligned, while still in the arch model, you will need to relocate the structural model and attempt to use option number 2 above.  But... the only way that I got option #2 to "save" back to the structural model was to use the project browser, under links find the structural link, right click and unload the structural link.  Once that happened revit gave me yet another alert about saving the coordinates back to the structural model, and that was the only time in this entire process that acquiring shared coordinates actually worked.
