Creating Worksets

A central file must be created before worksets and worksharing can be enabled on a project. The central file must remain on the server, and should not be edited directly after it is created.

1. Open the project file directly from the server. Do not save the file until you reach step 6 below.
2. Under the Collaborate ribbon, select "Worksets"
3. Levels and Grids are OK on "Shared Levels and Grids"
4. Move remaining elements to "1.Foundation" (alternately 0.Foundation, if you will have a separate Foundation Plan and a Level 1 Framing Plan)
5. You can create additional Worksets for the model elements now, you will create a workset for each plan view (i.e. 1.Foundation, 2.2nd Floor Framing, 3.Roof Framing).
You can also move the upper level model objects to their worksets at this point. You can only do this when a workset is "Editable" and you have ownership.
6. Perform a "SAVE AS" and rename the file with -Central added to the file name (i.e. "School Project 2011.rvt" becomes "School Project 2011-Central.rvt").
7. Change all the worksets to Non-Editable and "Synchronize with Central". If you are prompted to relinquish or save, choose the affirmative.
8. Perform another save as, but this time save the file to your local project folder, and change "Central" to your username ("School Project 2011-James.rvt").

You will edit this local file when you do markups. This local file is linked to the central file on the server. Any changes you make to a workset locally will lock that workset on the server, and other users cannot access that workset until you Synchronize with Central (Save to Central), or relinquish your checked out workset.

In addition to the model worksets created, each view is its own workset. You must enable the "Views" checkbox in the Worksets dialogue to see these. Other worksets include families, and project settings.

Any new model elements created are now placed on the active workset. Change the current workset to appropriate level before editing the model. Elements that vertically span multiple levels are to be placed on that element's lower level.
